]]> For its geographic location and wide array of topographies, climates and types of ground, Ezcaray’s area of the Sierra de La Demanda is an exceptional place for the observation of wild orchids in the natural environment. For evolutionary and adaptive reasons, orchids are considered one of the most interesting group of vegetable species today. The different habitats for bushes, forest and meadows contain one of the widest diversities in orchids in the Iberian Peninsula, with over 35 species, included in the varieties Orchis, Ophrys, Dactylorhiza, Cephalanthera, Epipactis, Coeloglossum, Serapias, Anacamptis, Gymnadenia, etc. For that reason, this valley is no stranger to personalities from the botanical world, both national and international.
Includes: Off-road vehicle guided itinerary, alternating each stop with short walks around the most distinctive habitats of the area. Basic notions on identification, ecology and photography of species. Duration: 3-4 hours. Season: 15 April- 15 June.

]]> This forest of hollies is truly a singular place. Its hollies are tall and leafy, and some of them are centuries old. Despite their reduced size, they represent one of the most remarkable and best preserved of the Iberian Peninsula, as its “arboreal” hollies form a dense and thick forest and act as shelter for a number of wild species. Formerly, the hollies forest was an important reserve for the supply of firewood, lumber and fodder. Around it stretches the Valgañón Meadow, a vast area of pasture where the livestock runs free, offering one of the best sceneries of the whole Sierra.
Silvestres Ezcaray organises a botanical guided itinerary from the locality of Valgañón. The route is circular, easy and achievable: 6.5 km and 350 m of altitude difference. Duration: 3.5 hours. Season: All year long.

]]> A group of trees that are legally catalogued for having outstanding particularities related to their shape, size or age, or for taking part in myths or traditions. At the moment, there are 58 protected specimens or groups of trees in La Rioja. 7 of them are in Ezcaray and its surroundings, conforming an important part of the heritage that must be preserved and is worth discovering.
Perfect for family strolls, short and achievable. In Ezcaray we visit the Shepherds’ Beech, which is the oldest specimen of all of La Rioja with its 450 years of age, or the Fallizco Lime, which stands out for its size and beauty. For anybody searching for something more technical, there is the huge Gusaila’s Ash, in an exceptional nook in the mountains, which is a little harder to get to.

]]> The wild cherry tree is a hardwood deciduous species from the Rosaceae family. It coexists spontaneously with other trees in the mixed mountain woods of the Sierra de la Demanda, characterised by their commendable ecological and scenic value. These woods are currently undergoing a process of expansion, offering great possibilities to the nature photographer regarding the capture of the intense colours that they acquire throughout the different seasons. The case of the cherry trees of Ezcaray’s valley seems special, as they captivate us in spring with their spectacular white flowers, ravishing us in autumn with their reddish tones combined to other tree species’ as a result of the foliage cover’s fall.
Includes: Botanical Guide, Transport in off-road vehicles and optical equipment for observation. Season: Spring: 15 april-15 may (afternoon recommended) and in autumn: October. Duration: 3 hours.
